Thousands of Cloud Findings — What Comes First?

When everything is critical, nothing is. Prioritizing cloud risk by exposure, identity and context instead of CVSS alone.

Thousands of Cloud Findings – But What Really Needs Attention First?

One of the central challenges in cloud security isn't a lack of information. Often, the situation is quite the opposite. Security scans can reveal thousands of vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, excessive permissions, and exposures. However, if everything is labeled as important, then effectively, nothing truly gets prioritized.

A vulnerability with a high CVSS score is not necessarily the most significant risk to an organization.

Understanding True Risk

To understand the actual risk, you also need to examine:

  • Is the asset exposed to the internet?
  • What permissions exist on it?
  • Is it connected to sensitive data?
  • Is the vulnerable component even active at runtime?
  • Is there an attack path that allows an attacker to progress from it to other assets?
  • Which team is responsible for the asset and can address it?

For example, a critical vulnerability on a server that is inaccessible, inactive, and not connected to sensitive data might be less urgent than a lower-severity vulnerability found on an internet-exposed asset with high privileges.

The Power of Context-Based Prioritization

This is the essence of Context-Based Prioritization: not trying to fix everything at once, but rather connecting vulnerabilities with exposure, identity, data, and actual activity. This approach allows you to address what truly poses a material risk first.

The goal of a successful Cloud Security program is not to generate more findings. The goal is to help the organization make better decisions about them.
